GOING FORWARD – ON TRAINING TEACHERS TO TEACH DIGITAL LEARNERS. THAT’S THE FOCUS AT AUSTIN ISD…THEY’RE STARTING A PILOT PROGRAM AT SEVERAL CAMPUSES TO HELP STUDENTS PREPARE FOR COLLEGE.AS K-X-A-N’S BRITTANY GLAS EXPLAINS… SOME ANDERSON STUDENTS ARE ALREADY EMBRACING THE TECHNOLOGY.COOPER TYLER: “THIS IS MY HOME SCREEN. WHERE I CAN SEE ALL OF MY CLASSES.” COOPER TYLER IS A SOPHOMORE AT ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL. THIS YEAR, HE’S BEEN USING THE “CANVAS — LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM” IN THREE OF HIS CLASSES. COOPER TYLER: “IT ALLOWS YOU TO VIEW ASSIGNMENTS AND LIKE TALK TO YOUR TEACHER AND SEE ALL OF THE FILES OVER THE ENTIRE YEAR.”ANDERSON IS PILOTING THE DIGITAL PROGRAM KNOWN AS BLEND.IT’S A áVIRTUAL CLASSROOMá … ACCESSIBLE FROM ANY DEVICE. SAMI HARRISON: “TEACHERS CAN POST VIDEOS OR SHARE THINGS INTERACTIVELY. THAT KIDS CAN LOOK AT ON A PHONE OR A TABLET OR A COMPUTER AT HOME.”COOPER TYLER: “WE JUST GET RIGHT INTO IT. AND IT’S LIKE AN IMMEDIATE THING. THERE’S NO RETEACHING, JUST LIKE JUST HIT THE GROUND RUNNING.” THE PROGRAM REQUIRES STUDENTS BE RESPONSIBLE FOR COURSEWORK… áBEFORE CLASS… IT’S SOMETHING COOPER’S MOM SAYS — WILL BE AN ADJUSTMENT. VALERIE TYLER: “IT’S SOMETIMES NICE TO HAVE THAT DOWN TIME WHERE MAYBE THE TEACHER SAYS TAKE THIRTY MINUTES TO READ OVER THIS.”BUT, SHE’S CONFIDENT IT’LL PREPARE HER CHILDREN FOR COLLEGE. ALL AISD CAMPUSES WILL HAVE THE BLEND PROGRAM AVAILABLE IN THE FALL.ANDERSON HAS BEEN LEADING THE WAY WHEN IT COMES TO TECHNOLOGY FOR SOME TIME NOW.EARLIER THIS YEAR- KXAN NEWS GOT A LOOK INSIDE THEIR NEW TECHNOLOGY CENTER.ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO AN ANONYMOUS DONOR PUT UP 3-POINT-ONE MILLION DOLLARS TO BUILD A TECHNOLOGY HUB ON THE BACK OF THE CAMPUS.IT OFFERS SEVERAL HANDS-ON COURSES INCLUDING COMPUTER SCIENCE AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERING.THE APPLIED TECH CENTER IS USED BY STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE
