Doctoral and Master’s Ceremony – Fall 2015

[ MUSIC ] STUDENTS, PLEASE RISE FOR THE FACULTY PROCESSIONAL. [ MUSIC ] WELL, GOOD EVENING, AND WELCOME. PLEASE RISE AND REMAIN STANDING FOR THE SINGING
OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, WHICH WILL BE SUNG BY MEMBERS OF THE GEORGIA
TECH CHAMBER CHOIR. OH, SAY CAN YOU SEE BY THE DAWN’S EARLY LIGHT, WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAILED AT THE TWILIGHT’S
LAST GLEAMING? WHOSE BROAD STRIPES AND BRIGHT STARS THROUGH
THE PERILOUS FIGHT, O’ER THE RAMPARTS WE WATCHED WERE SO GALLANTLY
STREAMING? AND THE ROCKET’S RED GLARE, THE BOMBS BURSTING
IN AIR, GAVE PROOF THROUGH THE NIGHT THAT OUR FLAG
WAS STILL THERE. OH, SAY DOES THAT STAR-SPANGLED BANNER YET
WAVE, O’ER THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF
THE BRAVE? [ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU. PLEASE BE SEATED. WELL, GOOD EVENING. AT THIS TIME, IT’S MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE
MS. ASHLEY ALVA, A MASTER’S CANDIDATE IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING, WHO WILL GIVE US OUR REFLECTION. ASHLEY? SO HERE WE ARE, GRADUATING FROM A SCHOOL THAT
DISCOVERED WATER ON MARS AND ALSO DISCOVERED ALL MAMMALS TAKE THE SAME
AMOUNT OF TIME TO PEE. TODAY YOU ARE GRADUATING FROM THE GEORGIA
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, A SCHOOL WHERE EVERY IDEA CAN BECOME A REALITY
WITH ONLY PASSION AS A COST TO ACHIEVE IT. WITH SUCH A PRECIOUS DEGREE, YOU WILL LAND
AN AMAZING JOB IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY OR PERHAPS GO BACK TO GRAD SCHOOL FOR EVEN
MORE DEGREES. BECAUSE WHAT IS OVERACHIEVING? AND THIS IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT
IT IS TO ACE THAT MIDTERM BY DAY AND SUBMIT A PAPER TO A RENOWNED JOURNAL BY
NIGHT BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS TO BE ADDICTED
TO THAT FEELING OF SUCCESS AND FINALLY BECAUSE YOU ARE ONE HELLUVA ‘N
ENGINEER. THE ATTITUDE OF BEING THE BEST WAS INGRAINED
IN YOU THE DAY YOU CAME TO TECH. TODAY, I’M NOT HERE TO REPEAT WHAT YOU ALREADY
KNOW ABOUT YOURSELF. HOWEVER, THERE IS SOMETHING A LOT OF US OVERLOOK
ABOUT WORK: HAPPINESS. THE STRUGGLE TO BE THE BEST BECOMES SO MUCH
EASIER WHEN YOU ARE DOING WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY. THIS THOUGHT BECAME VERY AT TECH. WHEN OUR
THESES OR PROJECTS ACTUALLY MATTERED TO US AND MADE US PROUD AND HAPPY TO WORK ON, ALL-NIGHTERS IN THE LAB SUDDENLY BECAME APPEALING, POSTER PRESENTATIONS SUDDENLY BECAME EXCITING, AND VENDING MACHINE FOOD ACTUALLY TASTED GOOD! IT IS VERY EASY TO FEEL DEPRESSED AND LOST
WHEN THE RESULTS OF A SIMULATION THAT YOU WORKED ON FOR AN ENTIRE MONTH ARE NOT WHAT
YOU EXPECTED. THAT IS WHEN TAKING OWNERSHIP OF YOUR WORK
AND FORMING AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION REALLY HELPS. AS SOON AS YOU FORGE THAT EMOTIONAL CONNECTION,
WORK STOPS BEING MERELY WORK. EVERY ASPECT TENDS TO BECOME A SOURCE OF HAPPINESS. REPEATING MY SIMULATION FOR 30 MORE DAYS DID
NOT SEEM CUMBERSOME ANYMORE BECAUSE I KNEW THAT THE RESULTS WHENEVER THEY CAME WOULD
MAKE A DIFFERENCE, AND THAT MADE ME HAPPY. EMOTION, I LEARNED, IS A VERY POWERFUL YET
UNDERRATED MOTIVATOR. WHAT IS COMMON TO PEOPLE LIKE THE WRIGHT BROTHERS,
STEVE JOBS, OR MALALA? THEY ARE PEOPLE THAT CREATED SOMETHING OF
VALUE CREATED THINGS FROM A PLACE OF PURE JOY. THEY PURSUED WHAT MATTERED TO THEM, WHAT MOTIVATED THEM AND KEPT THEM AWAKE AT NIGHT. AND, BOY, WHAT DIFFERENCE THEY MADE. AND WE, AS YELLOW JACKETS, HAVE BEEN CUT OUT
TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. WE’RE NOT BUILT FOR A LIFE WHERE WE COME HOME
FROM WORK AT 5, POP A SODA, WATCH TV. NO. WE ARE MADE TO ALWAYS PONDER ON CREATING THE
NEXT. WE ARE MADE TO CREATE RIPPLES OF CHANGE WHEREVER
WE GO, WHICH MIGHT AFFECT 1 PERSON OR 100 OR 1 MILLION. ALL THAT MATTERS WHILE WE STRIVE TO CREATE
THESE RIPPLES IS THAT WE NEVER LET FAILURES DETER US. AND FAILURE WILL NEVER DETER US IF WE ARE
EMOTIONALLY CONNECTED TO OUR WORK. SO MY EXCEPTIONAL FELLOW GRADUATES, LET US
STORM OUT THERE, ELEVATED BY THE PRIDE OF OUR GEORGIA TECH
PRIDE AND MAKE ONE HELLUVA DIFFERENCE. CONGRATULATIONS! [ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU, ASHLEY. CONGRATULATIONS AND GOOD LUCK. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ] GRADUATES, MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY AND STAFF,
DISTINGUISHED GUEST FAMILIES AND FRIENDS. IT’S MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO THE 250th
COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES AT THE GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. THIS WEEKEND WE ARE AWARDING OVER 2,400 DEGREES,
INCLUDING THE ALMOST 1200 GRADUATE DEGREES WE WILL BE AWARDING THIS EVENING. [ APPLAUSE ] AS WE CELEBRATE THE SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION
OF ONE CHAPTER OF YOUR LIFELONG EDUCATION, IT IS IMPORTANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE
NOT DONE IT ALONE. WITH YOU TODAY ARE MANY FAMILIES, FRIENDS,
AND COLLEAGUES WHOSE LOVE AND SUPPORT MADE THIS DAY POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION, WITH US ARE MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY
WHO HAVE GUIDED AND MENTORED YOU AS STUDENTS, SHARING WITH YOU THEIR TIME, THEIR WISDOM,
AND THEIR EXPERTISE IN ORDER THAT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU CAN
REACH YOUR FULLEST POTENTIAL AND ACHIEVE THIS IMPORTANT MILESTONE. WOULD THE MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY PLEASE STAND
AND BE RECOGNIZED? [ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US. WHILE I COULD TELL YOU, THE PARENTS, GUESTS,
FAMILIES, AND FRIENDS, HOW MUCH THE GRADUATES APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR
EFFORTS AND SUPPORT, I THINK IT WILL MEAN MORE COMING FROM THEM. I WANT TO THANK MY FAMILY. PAPA, MAMA, JIJO, ANDRE, MY DEAR FRIEND LAURIE,
GRANDMA ABU. THANKS FOR BEING HERE. THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT
TO ACCOMPLISH MY GOALS. I WANNA THANK MY MOM AND MY FAMILY FOR ALL
THEIR ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT OVER THE YEARS. MAMA, I MADE IT! I’M A HELLUVA ENGINEER! GO, JACKETS! I WANT TO SAY THANKS TO MY PARENTS AND MY
LITTLE BROTHER FOR BEING THERE FOR ME THROUGH EVERYTHING. A BIG SHOUT OUT TO MY GRANDPARENTS. GRANDPA, IF YOU’RE SEEING THIS, I HOPE YOU’RE
PROUD OF ME. I WANT TO THANK MY PARENTS, MY TWO SISTERS
AND MY TWO AUNTS FOR ALL THEIR LOVE. EVERYTHING I AM, AND EVERYTHING THAT I WILL
EVER ACCOMPLISH IS BECAUSE OF YOU. THANK YOU, GEORGIA TECH, FOR SIX AMAZING YEARS. AND THANKS, MOM AND DAD, FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT. I’M GRADUATING AGAIN! WOO-HOO! HEY, MOM AND DAD. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE SUPPORT AND
HELP GETTING ME THROUGH TECH. SIX YEARS. I’M DONE. MASTER’S. GO, JACKETS! HI, MOM AND DAD. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT,
WHICH ENABLED ME TO COME TO GEORGIA TECH. AND THANK YOU, GEORGIA TECH, FOR GIVING ME
THIS AWESOME OPPORTUNITY TO FOLLOW MY DREAMS AND PASSION. THANK YOU SO MUCH! [ APPLAUSE ] AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE SEVERAL
MEMBERS OF THE STAGE PARTY AND WILL ASK THAT YOU HOLD YOUR APPLAUSE AS
THEY STAND WHEN I CALL THEIR NAMES. DR. SUSAN COZZENS, VICE PROVOST, GRADUATE
EDUCATION AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT. [ APPLAUSE ] AT LEAST IT WASN’T ANY OF THE GRADUATES THAT
WERE CLAPPING. DR. COLIN POTTS, VICE PROVOST, UNDERGRADUATE
EDUCATION. MR. BARRETT CARSON, VICE PRESIDENT FOR DEVELOPMENT. DR. ARCHIE ERVIN, VICE PRESIDENT FOR INSTITUTE
DIVERSITY. MR. JOHN STEIN, VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT
LIFE AND DEAN OF STUDENTS. MR. JEFF CARRICO, REPRESENTING THE LIBRARY. DR. NELSON BAKER, DEAN OF GEORGIA TECH PROFESSIONAL
EDUCATION. MRS. JENNIFER HERAZY, ASSISTANT PROVOST FOR
ADMINISTRATION. AND MS. RETA PIKOWSKY, REGISTRAR. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. [ APPLAUSE ] THIS IS A MOMENTOUS DAY FOR YOU AS GRADUATES, AND FOR YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO ARE SHARING
THE CELEBRATION OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. YOU HAVE WORKED VERY HARD TO EARN YOUR DEGREE
FROM ONE OF THE BEST INSTITUTIONS IN THE NATION, AND IN MANY AREAS, ONE OF THE BEST IN THE
WORLD, AND YOU WILL FOREVER BE LINKED TO THIS GREAT
INSTITUTION. INCLUDED AMONG THOSE RECEIVING THEIR DEGREES
THIS EVENING ARE OUR FIRST GRADUATES FROM GEORGIA TECH’S ONLINE MASTER OF SCIENCE IN
COMPUTER SCIENCE. GEORGIA TECH’S OMS-CS PROGRAM HAS RECEIVED
NATIONAL ATTENTION, AS IT IS THE FIRST ACCREDITED MASTER OF SCIENCE
DEGREE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE THAT STUDENTS CAN EARN EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH THE MASSIVE OPEN
ONLINE COURSE DELIVERY FORMAT. THE BEST COMPUTING EDUCATION IN THE WORLD
IS NOW AVAILABLE TO THE WORLD. CONGRATULATIONS. [ APPLAUSE ] AT GEORGIA TECH, WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON BEING
TRAILBLAZERS WHO DRIVE REAL-WORLD CHANGE BY EMBRACING CHALLENGES, THINKING CRITICALLY,
AND DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST PRESSING PROBLEMS. YOUR GEORGIA TECH EDUCATION IS DESIGNED TO
PREPARE YOU TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY, TO IDENTIFY CHALLENGES, AND CREATE SOLUTIONS; AND TO BE A LEADER IN BUSINESS, INDUSTRY,
AND GOVERNMENT, AND THE COMMUNITIES IN WHICH YOU WILL LIVE AND WORK. GEORGIA TECH IS IN THE BUSINESS OF CREATING
THE NEXT. THE NEXT IDEA, THE NEXT TECHNOLOGY, AND THE
NEXT INNOVATORS, ENTREPRENEURS, SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, BUSINESSMEN AND WOMEN. WE’RE EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION, THE NEXT GENERATION THAT HAS THE PASSION AND
SKILLS THAT THEY WILL NEED TO NOT ONLY BUILD OUR FUTURE, BUT TO DESIGN IT. WE ARE LOOKING FOR GREAT THINGS FROM EACH
OF YOU. AND CONGRATULATIONS. [ APPLAUSE ] AS IS OUR CUSTOM, THE CLASS OF 1934 DISTINGUISHED
PROFESSOR GIVES THE DECEMBER MASTER’S AND PH. D. COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS. THE 2015 RECIPIENT IS DR. GEORGE NEMHAUSER, AN INSTITUTE PROFESSOR AND RUSSELL
CHANDLER III CHAIR IN INDUSTRIAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING. DR. NEMHAUSER IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE WORLD’S
TOP OPTIMIZATION RESEARCHERS. HE HAS WON EVERY MAJOR AWARD IN THE FIELD
OF OPTIMIZATION, INCLUDING THE FIELD’S FIRST-EVER KHACHIYAN
PRIZE FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN 2010. DR. NEMHAUSER CAME TO GEORGIA TECH IN 1985. HE WAS THE FIRST SITTING GEORGIA TECH PROFESSOR
TO BE ELECTED TO THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING. AND HIS WORK HAS DRAMATICALLY IMPACTED THE
THEORY AND APPLICATION OF OPTIMIZATION. HE HAS MORE THAN 200 PUBLICATIONS AND MORE
THAN 25,000 CITATIONS. ONE OF HIS BOOKS HAS BEEN THE PREMIER TEXTBOOK
ON INTEGER AND COMBINATORIAL OPTIMIZATION FOR 25 YEARS. AND HE HAS DELIVERED PLENARY OR KEYNOTE ADDRESSES
IN 15 COUNTRIES ON FIVE CONTINENTS. PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING PROFESSOR GEORGE
NEMHAUSER. [ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU, PRESIDENT PETERSON, FOR INVITING
ME TO GIVE THIS COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS. IT IS A GREAT HONOR TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO SPEAK TO OUR ADVANCED-DEGREE GRADUATES, THEIR FAMILIES, AND FRIENDS. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU GRADUATING TODAY! RECEIVING A MASTER’S OR PH. D. DEGREE MEANS
THAT YOU HAVE BEEN A COLLEGE STUDENT FOR AT LEAST FIVE YEARS, AND FOR SOME OF YOU, IT’S
ALMOST DOUBLE THAT, COUNTING YOUR UNDERGRADUATE YEARS. THAT’S A LONG HAUL, AND I’M SURE YOU’RE EAGER
TO MOVE ON. BEING A PROFESSOR, I’M ACCUSTOMED TO GIVING
50-MINUTE LECTURES. AS OF TODAY, YOU’RE DONE WITH ALL OF THAT,
SO I’LL TRY TO MAKE THIS ONE A LITTLE SHORTER. I BELIEVE MY JOB TODAY IS TO GIVE YOU ADVICE
ON YOUR CAREER AND LIFE GOALS. LATER, I’LL SHARE WITH YOU SOME OF MY THOUGHTS
ABOUT SUCCESS, BUT I’D LIKE TO START BY ENCOURAGING YOU TO
LISTEN AND THINK CAREFULLY OVER ALL ADVICE YOU’RE GIVEN TO MAKE SURE THAT IT REALLY WORKS
FOR YOU. HERE ARE A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES FROM MY LIFE
AND CAREER. I RECEIVED A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING, BUT I DIDN’T FEEL ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT GETTING
A REAL JOB, SO I ENROLLED IN A PH. D. PROGRAM IN CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING AT NORTHWESTERN. MY FAVORITE AND BEST SUBJECT HAD ALWAYS BEEN
MATH, AND FOR AN ELECTIVE IN MY FIRST SEMESTER OF GRADUATE STUDY, I SIGNED UP FOR A NEW COURSE
CALLED OPERATIONS RESEARCH IN THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING. AN EMERGING FIELD AT THE TIME, OPERATIONS
RESEARCH IS A DISCIPLINE THAT DEALS WITH THE APPLICATION OF ADVANCED ANALYTICAL METHODS
TO HELP MAKE BETTER DECISIONS. ACADEMICALLY, IT IS AT THE INTERSECTION OF
MATHEMATICS, INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING, AND COMPUTER SCIENCE. IT FOCUSES ON BUILDING MODELS AND ALGORITHMS
FOR SOLVING PRACTICAL PROBLEMS IN BUSINESS, INDUSTRY, GOVERNMENT, AND SOCIETY. I LOVED THIS COURSE AND THE PROFESSOR WHO
TAUGHT IT. FOR THE FIRST TIME, I WAS REALLY EXCITED AND
INSPIRED BY SOMETHING ACADEMIC. I CAME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS VACATION AND TOLD
MY PARENTS THAT I WAS SWITCHING FROM CHEMICAL ENGINEERING TO A NEW PROGRAM CALLED OPERATIONS
RESEARCH. THEY, VERY CARING WORKING-CLASS PEOPLE, WERE
APPALLED. “HOW WILL YOU FIND A JOB,” THEY ASKED ME. “WHAT IF THIS IS A PASSING FAD BASED UPON
THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY OF THE COMPUTERS THAT MIGHT NOT EVEN WORK?” I RETURNED TO SCHOOL AND SWITCHED MAJORS BUT
DIDN’T TELL MY PARENTS FOR QUITE A WHILE. DESPITE THEIR WELL-INTENDED ADVICE TO THE
CONTRARY, THIS WAS ONE OF THE THREE BEST DECISIONS I HAVE MADE IN MY LIFE. THREE MONTHS LATER, I WOULD MEET MY FUTURE
WIFE, ELLEN. AFTER ANOTHER THREE MONTHS, WE WERE MARRIED
AT AGES 22 AND 20, RESPECTIVELY. FIFTY-SIX YEARS LATER AND STILL IN LOVE WITH
ELLEN, I CAN SAY THAT THIS WAS THE BEST DECISION I MADE IN MY LIFE, DESPITE VARIOUS PIECES
OF FRANK ADVICE SAYING THAT WE WERE TOO YOUNG, DIDN’T KNOW EACH OTHER LONG ENOUGH, ETCETERA. I HAVE ONE MORE EXAMPLE, AND THIS ONE INVOLVES
GEORGIA TECH. I HAVE TAUGHT MY WHOLE PROFESSIONAL LIFE,
FIRST AT JOHNS HOPKINS IN THE SIXTIES AND THEN AT CORNELL FOR 15 YEARS BEFORE COMING
TO TECH IN 1985. TECH WAS A VERY DIFFERENT PLACE 30 YEARS AGO. IT HAS ALWAYS HAD AN EXCELLENT REPUTATION
FOR UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION AND, OF COURSE, STILL DOES. BUT, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF PRESIDENT JOE
PETTIT, TECH WAS JUST BEGINNING TO EMERGE AS AN INSTITUTE THAT FOCUSED ON BASIC RESEARCH
AND GRADUATE EDUCATION. MIKE THOMAS, ONE OF MY VERY FIRST PH. D. STUDENTS
AT HOPKINS, WAS CHAIR OF THE SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING AND WOULD LATER SERVE
AS PROVOST. DURING TECH’S FIRST CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, MIKE
PERSUADED RUSS CHANDLER TO ENDOW A CHAIR IN ISYE AND OFFERED ME THE POSITION. I SAW IT AS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY. THE CHAIR WOULD PROVIDE ME WITH RESOURCES
TO BUILD A NEW RESEARCH PROGRAM, AND I WOULD PLAY A KEY ROLE IN FILLING MANY
OPEN FACULTY POSITIONS. MY CORNELL COLLEAGUES WERE SHOCKED THAT I
WOULD CONSIDER LEAVING A GREAT IVY LEAGUE BASTION OF LEARNING, ESPECIALLY TO COME TO THE BACKWARD, SLEEPY
SOUTH WHERE THE ONLY THINGS THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE BETTER WERE FOOTBALL AND WEATHER. WHEN I ANNOUNCED THAT I WAS COMING TO TECH,
DESPITE ALL THEIR WELL-MEANING ADVICE TO THE CONTRARY, THEY THOUGHT I HAD LOST MY MIND. BUT THIS WAS ANOTHER OF THE BEST DECISIONS THAT
I HAVE MADE IN MY CAREER. SO WHAT’S TO BE LEARNED FROM MY STORIES? I DO BELIEVE THERE IS GUARANTEED GOOD ADVICE
OF A GENERAL NATURE, BUT IT’S UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO APPLY IT IN SPECIFIC
SITUATIONS. CHANGING MY STUDIES AND CAREER TO OPERATIONS
RESEARCH EXEMPLIFIES SEVERAL ELEMENTS THAT I THINK ARE MOST IMPORTANT FOR GREAT SUCCESS. ONE, FIND YOUR PASSION. YOU’VE GOT TO LOVE WHAT YOU’RE DOING. BUT PASSION NEEDS TO BE REINFORCED BY RESULTS. SO, NUMBER 2, DO GOOD. DO SOMETHING THAT MAKES THE WORLD A BETTER
PLACE TO LIVE IN. I LOVE DOING RESEARCH BECAUSE I BELIEVE THE
RESULTS IMPROVE OUR QUALITY OF LIFE. BUT I LOVE BEING A PROFESSOR EVEN MORE, BECAUSE OF THE STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY YOU GRADUATE
STUDENTS, WITH WHOM I’VE WORKED ONE ON ONE ON RESEARCH
PROJECTS AND DISSERTATIONS. IT GIVES ME THE GREATEST PLEASURE WHEN ONE
OF MY STUDENTS BECOMES A FACULTY MEMBER AT ONE OF OUR PEER INSTITUTIONS. NUMBER THREE, GUT FEELING. SOMETIMES, INSTINCT BEATS LOGIC OR ANALYTICS
WHEN ARRIVING AT THE BEST THING TO DO. ALTHOUGH MY PROFESSION IS ALL ABOUT ANALYTIC
DECISION MAKING, I BELIEVE THAT SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS YOU MAKE COME FROM
THE GUT, LIKE WHEN I CHOSE OPERATIONS RESEARCH AS A
MAJOR. NUMBER FOUR, WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN. HAVING FUN MOTIVATES HARD WORK. SUCCESS RARELY HAPPENS WITHOUT HARD WORK. BEING WILLING TO MAKE THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE
EFFORT USUALLY COMES ABOUT NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE THE MOST DISCIPLINED PERSON, BUT BECAUSE
YOU’RE HAVING FUN. SOMETIMES, PASSION AND A DESIRE TO DO GOOD
AND HARD WORK ARE NOT ENOUGH TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL. THIS LEADS ME TO ADVICE GIVEN BY SUPREME COURT
JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG. SHE SAID, NUMBER FIVE, FIGHT FOR THE THINGS
YOU CARE ABOUT, BUT DO IT IN A WAY THAT WILL LEAD OTHERS TO
JOIN YOU. SOON AFTER I CAME TO TECH, PRESIDENT PETIT
PASSED AWAY. IN 1987, HE WAS SUCCEEDED BY PAT CRECINE,
WHO HAD BEEN THE PROVOST AT CARNEGIE MELON. PRESIDENT CRECINE’S VISION WAS TO CREATE A
TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY. IN 1988, HE PROPOSED A CONTROVERSIAL RESTRUCTURING
OF THE UNIVERSITY THAT INVOLVED THE CREATION OF THREE NEW COLLEGES, ONE OF WHICH WOULD BE THE COLLEGE OF COMPUTING, THE FIRST SUCH COLLEGE IN THE COUNTRY. THE REORGANIZATION WAS INITIALLY OPPOSED BY
MANY OF THE FACULTY, AND IN PARTICULAR BY LEADERS OF THE FACULTY
SENATE. THEY THOUGHT MAINTAINING THE STATUS QUO WAS
PREFERRED TO THE RISK OF THE UNKNOWN, BUT I WAS VERY MUCH IN FAVOR OF THE CHANGE
SINCE IT WAS A PERFECT FIT WITH MY ASPIRATIONS IN COMING TO TECH. I WAS DELIGHTED WHEN PAT ASKED ME TO CHAIR
THE COMMITTEE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COLLEGE OF COMPUTING. JUSTICE GINSBURG’S ADVICE WAS EXACTLY WHAT
I USED TO FINALIZE A RECOMMENDATION, AND IN THE END THE WHOLE FACULTY VOTED TO
APPROVE THE REORGANIZATION. I BELIEVE THE REORGANIZATION HELPED TRANSFORM
TECH FROM A SPECIALIZED INSTITUTION TO A TOP NATIONAL UNIVERSITY. AT THE TIME THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING’S NATIONAL
GRADUATE RANKING WAS 14TH; NOW IT IS SIXTH NATIONALLY AND SECOND AMONG
PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES. THE COMPUTER SCIENCE GRADUATE PROGRAM IS IN
THE TOP 10, AND MANY OTHER ENGINEERING PROGRAMS ARE IN
THE TOP 10 AS WELL. IN FACT, ELEVEN OF THEM. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT A GRADUATE DEGREE FROM
TECH PROVIDES GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FUTURE. AND YOU ARE NOW WALKING INTO THE FUTURE. FILL IT WITH WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO, WORK HARD, CREATE A BETTER WORLD FOR EVERYONE, FOLLOW YOUR GUT FEELINGS, AND TALK IN A WAY THAT PEOPLE WILL BELIEVE
YOU. BUT MOST OF ALL HAVE, FUN. I AM CONFIDENT THAT ALL OF YOU GRADUATES WILL
MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. AS NICK SELBY IN HIS 2013 CONVOCATION SPEECH
SO APTLY PUT IT, YOU CAN DO THAT! GO JACKETS! [ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE WITH US THIS EVENING,
PROFESSOR NEMHAUSER. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. [ APPLAUSE ] AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK OUR PROVOST,
DR. RAFAEL BRAS TO PLEASE JOIN ME AT THE PODIUM, ALONG WITH MR. BERNARD MARCUS. [ APPLAUSE ] THE MOST SIGNIFICANT HONOR THAT A UNIVERSITY
CAN BESTOW IS THE HONORARY DEGREE. AT GEORGIA TECH, WE HOLD THESE DEGREES VERY
DEAR. ONLY 31 HONORARY DEGREES HAVE BEEN AWARDED
IN THE INSTITUTE’S 130 YEAR HISTORY. HONORARY DEGREE HOLDERS FROM GEORGIA TECH
INCLUDE PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER, ATLANTA MAYOR IVAN ALLEN, JR., ASTRONAUT JOHN YOUNG, OIL
EXECUTIVE PETE SILAS, AND SENATOR SAM NUNN. THIS EVENING, THE GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
WILL CONFER ITS THIRTY SECOND HONORARY DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY ON BERNIE MARCUS. [ APPLAUSE ] [ APPLAUSE ] LET ME READ YOU THE CITATION. “TO ALL WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME, GREETINGS. WHEREAS BERNARD MARCUS HAS PROFOUNDLY AFFECTED
THE WORLD AROUND HIM AS THE CO-FOUNDER OF THE HOME DEPOT, THE LEADING GLOBAL COMPANY, WHICH HAS REVOLUTIONIZED
THE HOME IMPROVEMENT RETAIL INDUSTRY; HAS ENRICHED THE LIVES OF HIS COMMUNITY, THE
STATE OF GEORGIA, THE UNITED STATES, AND BEYOND, EMBODYING CIVIC LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE THROUGH
TRANSFORMATIVE PHILANTHROPY; AND, THROUGH THE MARCUS FOUNDATION, HAS ADVANCED
THE GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY’S RESEARCH ENTERPRISE TOWARD THE CREATION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE FOR THE
BETTERMENT OF HUMANKIND; NOW THEREFORE, WE DO HEREBY CONFER THE DEGREE
HONORARY DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY WITH ALL THE RIGHTS, PRIVILEGES, AND HONORS THEREUNTO APPERTAINING. IN WITNESS, WHEREOF, THE SIGNATURES OF THE
CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM AND THE PRESIDENT AND THE REGISTRAR OF THE GEORGIA

INTO THE FELLOWSHIP OF TECH, I AM PLEASED TO INTRODUCE MR. JOSEPH IRWIN, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE GEORGIA TECH ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION. [ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU, MR. PRESIDENT. CONGRATULATIONS NEW GEORGIA TECH ALUMNI! YOU CAN SEE THE SMILE ON MY FACE CAUSE I REMEMBER HOW IT FELT MANY YEARS AGO
WHEN I WAS IN YOUR SEAT. YOU’RE NOW A MEMBER OF A GROUP OF INFLUENTIAL
LEADERS ACROSS THE GLOBE. DOING WELL FOR THEMSELVES AND DOING GOOD FOR
MANKIND. IT’S A UNIQUE GROUP OF PEOPLE, TOO. AND WE ALL SHARE SEVERAL THINGS IN COMMON, AND I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THOSE THINGS TODAY, IN LESS THAN 3 MINUTES AND 45 SECONDS. WE HAVE A LOT OF TRADITIONS AT GEORGIA TECH HERE: THE FIGHT SONG, THE RAMBLIN’ WRECK, BUZZ,
DOING THE WALK OF SHAME FROM YOUR LABORATORY IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS. YES, THERE ARE A LOT OF THEM. BUT I WANT TO SUGGEST TO YOU THAT WHILE THESE
TRADITIONS HELP CHARACTERIZE DISTINCTIVELY GEORGIA TECH, THERE ARE OTHER MORE REAL TRADITIONS THAT
ARISE FROM A GEORGIA TECH EDUCATION. AND I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE HERE BECAUSE I’VE
MET AND KNOWN LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF GEORGIA TECH ALUMNI. THE FIRST TRADITION IS YOUR WORK ETHIC. YOU HAVE BEEN CHALLENGED MIGHTILY HERE, YOU’VE WORKED HARDER THAN YOU EVER HAVE IN
YOUR LIVES. ALL OF THAT WORK HAS PAID OFF WITH YOUR EARNING
YOUR DEGREE, BUT IT’S ALSO SOMETHING THAT SETS YOU APART
FROM MANY, MANY OTHERS IN THIS WORLD. YOUR WORK ETHIC IS A GEORGIA TECH TRADITION
OF THE FIRST ORDER. AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW THAT YOU’RE CAPABLE
OF WORKING HARDER AND MORE, YOU WILL NEVER FIND YOURSELF WITHOUT WORK. SECONDLY, YOU HAVE EXTRAORDINARY PROBLEM-SOLVING
SKILLS. YOU CAN TAKE A PROBLEM, ANALYZE IT, BREAK
IT DOWN, AND SOLVE IT. THAT’S RIGHT. TECH PEOPLE ARE CRITICAL THINKERS AND PROBLEM
SOLVERS. BUT IT TAKES MORE THAN JUST ANALYTICAL SKILLS
TO SOLVE PROBLEMS. IT ALSO TAKES RESOURCEFULNESS AND CREATIVITY. AND YOU HAVE THESE TWO QUALITIES IN ABUNDANCE BECAUSE YOU HAD TO, TO SURVIVE HERE AT TECH. PERSEVERANCE IS THE THIRD TRADITION, AND IT’S ACTUALLY SOMETHING THAT SHOULD SAY
ON YOUR DIPLOMA. IT SHOULD SAY SOMETHING LIKE, “MASTER OF SCIENCE
IN ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING AND PERSEVERANCE.” PERSEVERANCE IS THAT INDOMITABLE TRAIT WITHIN
YOU THAT SAYS NO MATTER HOW DIFFICULT IT IS, NO MATTER HOW LONG IT WILL TAKES, I WILL PREVAIL. SUCCESS CAN NEVER BE ATTAINED WITHOUT PERSEVERANCE. AND YOU WILL SUCCEED. FOURTH, YOU CANNOT SURVIVE A GEORGIA TECH
EXPERIENCE WITHOUT A DEEP PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE. WE, GEORGIA TECH ALUMNI, DO NOT WANT TO PUT
OUR NAMES ON THINGS THAT AREN’T DONE RIGHT. WE WANT TO DO THINGS RIGHT AND DO THE RIGHT
THINGS. FINALLY, YOU ARE DRIVEN TO SUCCEED. YOUR AMBITION IS FUELED BY YOUR PASSION IN
YOUR LIFE AND YOUR WORK. THAT AMBITION, THAT DRIVE, WILL SERVE YOU
WELL ALL OF YOUR LIFE. SO THAT’S MY THEORY. YOU’RE NOW ALL IMBUED WITH THE REAL TRADITIONS
OF A GEORGIA TECH EDUCATION: YOUR WORK ETHIC, YOUR PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS,
YOUR PERSEVERANCE, YOUR PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE, AND YOUR DRIVE. I’VE SEEN IT IN ALL ALUMNI OF ALL GENERATIONS
ACROSS ALL DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE. AND IN ADDITION TO THE FINEST DEGREE IN THE
WORLD, YOU NOW HAVE ACCESS TO THE FINEST NETWORK
OF ALUMNI IN THE WORLD. AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TO ASK FOR THEIR
HELP. IT’S AN ASSET ON YOUR PERSONAL BALANCE SHEET. LEVERAGE IT TO ADVANCE YOUR DREAMS. IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE STUDENT ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION OR HAD A MENTOR IN THE MENTOR JACKETS PROGRAM, WOULD YOU PLEASE STAND UP? I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR PHILANTHROPY
TO GEORGIA TECH WHILE YOU WERE A MASTER’S OR GRAD STUDENT HERE. IT’S A GREAT PROGRAM. TO WELCOME YOU ALL TO THE GEORGIA TECH ALUMNI
NETWORK, AN ANONYMOUS ALUMNI HAS MADE A $25 GIFT IN
EACH OF YOUR NAMES, PAYABLE IN THIS YEAR’S ROLL CALL, WHICH ENDS
JUNE 30TH. HE’S PAYING IT FORWARD TO HONOR YOU. WE HOPE THAT YOU’LL FOLLOW HIS LEAD NEXT YEAR
WHEN WE ASK YOU TO SUPPORT GEORGIA TECH’S ACADEMIC MISSION THROUGH ROLL CALL. MY HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS ON EARNING YOUR
GEORGIA TECH DEGREE. WELCOME TO THE FINEST ALUMNI NETWORK ON THE
GLOBE! THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ] WELL, THANK YOU, JOE. GREAT TO HAVE YOU HERE WITH US. YOU HAVE PROBABLY NOTICED DURING THE COMMENCEMENT
A FEW PEOPLE WALKING BY WITH SASHES, SPECIAL SASHES. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THOSE VETERANS, THE SERVICE
MEN AND WOMEN, BOTH IN OUR STUDENT GROUP AND THOSE IN THE AUDIENCE, TO PLEASE STAND
AND BE RECOGNIZED. [ APPLAUSE ] THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. WE GREATLY APPRECIATE AND HONOR IT. AT THIS TIME, MEMBERS OF THE CHAMBER CHOIR
WILL LEAD US IN THE ALMA MATER, FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY THE FACULTY RECESSIONAL. THE GRADUATES AND THE AUDIENCE ARE REQUESTED
TO REMAIN STANDING AS THE PLATFORM PARTY RECESSES. THEN I INVITE ALL OF YOU TO
JOIN US IN THE SINGING OF THE BEST-KNOWN FIGHT
