Online Music Therapy Master’s Degree – Student Story: Tina H.

My name is Tina Haynes. I’m a music therapist with the VA Medical Center here in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Right outside Nashville, Tennessee. I’m working on my master’s in music and my emphasis there is music therapy. Well, I’ve been here at the VA hospital in Murfreesboro for almost 35 years, working out of the music therapy clinic. Music therapy actually has a long history at this particular VA. We go way back to being one of the first. I’ve worked with many veterans through the years. Everything from World War I, all the way up to our current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It changes lives, it truly does. It’s an honor to be a part of that change. The Colorado State faculty is very accommodating to your personal needs. I was, for a year, a caregiver for my elderly parents. I was doing all I could just to maintain my work schedule but the Colorado State family allowed me to work at my own pace, and my own level to complete the program. I’m so impressed with the faculty They publish, they do a lot of research, they’re very visible in the field of music therapy So when I got to be involved in the online program, I got to interact with them on a different level They’ve really got me out of my comfort zone, particularly in terms of technology. I’ve learned things I’ve never thought I’d be able to do with a computer, and with electronic instruments. It’s really, really, challenged me to learn and grow. There are a variety of learning experiences to treat these individuals with communication and attention and memory, cognitive issues. I’ve seen, working with my veterans how effective these techniques are. We want our veterans to improve on their quality of lives, so that they can go out and live the life that they want for themselves. I can’t wait to finish my master’s. It’s prepared me for the future and prepared me to continue to serve with my veterans with the latest advancements in music therapy and to improve their lives, and their quality of care.
