School hires firm to monitor kids online

JULIE, CHRISTI. GOING TO BE CREATIVE IN OUR PRESENTATION HERE. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT A PROGRAM RIGHT NOW IN GLENDALE WHERE THE SCHOOL CAN LOOK AT ALL THOSE PUBLIC POSTINGS ON BEHALF OF THOSE STUDENTS. WHAT ABOUT PRIVACY LAWS?>>IF IT’S A PRIVATE SCHOOL, THIS IS OKAY, I THINK, BECAUSE THEY’RE ALLOWED TO DO WHAT THEY WANT TO DO IN THIS RESPECT. IF IT’S A PUBLIC SCHOOL, IT’S A LITTLE DIFFERENT. IT COULD BE A FOURTH AMENDMENT ISSUE. YOU CAN’T HAVE UNREASONABLE SEARCHES AND SEIZURES. BUT ARE THESE PAGES PUBLIC? IF THEY HAVE. THEY DON’T HAVE AN EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY. >>FOURTH AMENDMENT?>>THAT WOULD BE THE CHALLENGE IF THEY WANT TO CHALLENGE IT IF IT’S A PUBLIC SCHOOL. >>WHAT ELSE? YOU PUT DOWN — WHAT ELSE — >>BUT THEN HERE’S THE THING. THIS GOES AWAY IF IT’S PUBLIC. IF THEY HAVE PUBLIC PAGES, RIGHT, PUBLIC TWITTER PAGE BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE AN EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY. IT’S OUT THERE. I COULD READ IT. YOU COULD READ IT. YOUR PRINCIPAL COULD READ IT. THAT’S THE KEY LEGALLY. WITH PARENTS, IT’S A DIFFERENT SITUATION. >>DO THE STUDENTS KNOW THEY’RE BEING MONITORED? DID THE SCHOOLS SAY — >>THEY LET EVERYBODY KNOW. BUT THEY DON’T NEED PERMISSION. THEY’RE SAYING, HEY, PARENTS AND STUDENT, WE’RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT ALL THIS BUT WE DON’T NEED YOUR PERMISSION. >>IN MANY WAYS, THEY MIGHT NOT. A PRINCIPAL LOOKING AT THEIR ACCOUNT ON THE WEB. I COULD DO IT. THE PRINCIPAL COULD DO IT. IF IT’S A PRIVATE PAGE, IT CAN BE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. THAT’S WHY I WOULD SAY IF PARENTS LIKE THIS PROGRAM, THEY WOULD NEED TO DO SOMETHING CRITICAL. MAKE SURE THEIR KIDS DON’T HAVE PRIVATE PAGES. MAKE SURE THEIR PAGE IS A LITTLE BIT PUBLIC SO SCHOOLS CAN MONITOR THIS KIND OF CONDUCT. >>AS A PARENT — THE SCHOOL IS SAYING, WE WANT TO LOOK OUT FOR MAYBE ANY WAYS TO KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE, THAT’S WHAT AS A PARENT, I’M OKAY WITH THAT. I KNOW IT FEELS A LITTLE BIG BROTHERISH, BUT WE GO TO SO MANY EXTREMES TO KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE. >>I CAN’T WATCH MY KIDS’S FRIENDS AND OTHER PEOPLE AT SCHOOL THEY DON’T KNOW. MAYBE THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE THE ADMINISTRATION WOULD KNOW ABOUT. I WOULDN’T KNOW THAT. WHEN WE TALK ABOUT KIDS BEING SAFE, IT’S

    That's fucked up.

  3. Keyspirits says:

HA no more kidz watching p****

  4. CazK88 says:

Now the schools are playing the role as "parent"? Money can go towards spying on our children, but we can't put money towards resources to help our kids learn?!

  5. Mathewmartialart says:

well effectively considering the mount of time they spend with the kids and educating them, YES they are technically temp parents

  6. Mathewmartialart says:

the only thing i can see this remotely being ok & the schools having some basis to act upon would be #cyber #bullying or/& even #mentalhealth , that being said back in the 80's/90's teachers couldn't do a damned thing to the kids if the stated activities were OUTSIDE of school property.

  7. seanotoolestuff says:

So what, I spend 8 hours a day at a shithole that I hate to the bone 5 days a week, and it gives them the right to scroll my Facebook, which is all privated down and shit?

  8. Ed A says:

    Poor use of chalkboard.

  9. Mathewmartialart says:

Weither you like being there or not doesnt come to the basis of a "parent", hell you could easily say the same thing at home does that then qualify the fact your peers stop being your actual parents. The fact it even cops or the person you wouldn't even let near you browse your social media activities IF its posted on those pages, unless you keep your pages/accounts private. so yes Anybody can browse the net& your accounts.but its weither they can ACT on it AT school

  10. Mathewmartialart says:

how would that even happen, they wont be able to SEE what you are doing such as watching or looking at, they will only see what the account has on the page

  11. CazK88 says:

Ok, well if that were the case, then there is a fine line between the parental "jurisdiction" the school has from 8am-4pm duirng the day. Since when did the school continue to parent the students beyond the standard school hours? Jobs can be parents too, right? It has rules and regulations. Suppose your job monitored you after hours?

  12. Mathewmartialart says:

considering your peers ie your parents should be doing this in the first place, its not much of a shock. but its a shock if the school can ACT on it WITHIN the school grounds from the activities which would actually be out of school hours. unless the activities are done during school hours, in which case they have EVERY right to do it

  13. Mathewmartialart says:

what has this got to do with whats being spoken about, you seem to be creating a topic/issue that is of your view and not of the subject matter

  14. Mathewmartialart says:

absolutely, and thats where the questions lays of the action they can go with and when. the only time i can see them remotely acting on what they have seen is whilst on school ground IF the posts have been done during school hours

  18. javalily says:

Yeah kiddies, make your profiles are public so that pedophiles can see everything and everywhere you go…real good advice idiots. Who needs privacy?! Just be up your kids ass 24-7, but do nothing to actually parent them, then you wouldn't have to be up their ass in the 1st damn place! And what their friends do is none of your damned business either! So glad I didn't grow up in this generation. Poor kids.

  19. HoneyBadger9831 says:

True that javalily everyone needs privacy.

  24. MsKTMvalley says:

Sure, people can't be trusted, or you sure can't determine who can and can't be

  25. Derek Stevens says:

I'm going to call them up and ask them why.

  26. Derek Stevens says:

It's like they didn't even bother to research the basic facts of the story? Is it a public school? Is it a private school? They willingly admit they have no idea, but they go off making conjectures about what the news story could be about. The facts are right there in front of you. All you have to do is report what is on the teleprompter. And if the facts about the story are not on the prompter–well, then, that's what you get when you work for corporate shills.

  27. CaptainEO420 says:

THIS SHOW IS RETARDED. THIS IS A BAD IDEA. DO KIDS NEED PRIVACY RIGHTS FROM SCHOOLS MONITORING THEM OFF CAMPUS NOW. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG THIS CORPORATIONS AND THE GOVERNMENT

  28. John Young says:

Thank god they had that choke board! Very useful, very useful

  29. southport97 says:

NO SUCH THING AS PRIVACY ANYMORE THANKS TO LAWMAKERS TRYING TO "FIX" EVERYTHING. They suffer from the delusion that you can somehow make the world perfectly safe for children and prevent suicides. Unfortunately, it isn't possible and their fruitless efforts to make it so quickly claim an unjustifiable price in both tax money and liberty. "If it saves one life it's worth it" isn't much of a argument to justify this draconian bullshit!

  30. southport97 says:

We must pander and appease the worrywart parents with security theater!

  31. Richard Lafreniere says:

    I liked this video 🙂

  41. jaymoore299 says:

What the hell do you need the backboard for?

  42. Tyuakii says:

    Oh those captions XD

  43. Charlie Kroupa says:

What they're really saying is that they're too lazy to be actual parents and monitor their kids, and it's okay to for the school to do it for them even if means giving up some of their privacy. The ignorance should amaze me, but I don't know anymore.

  44. tikimandude112 says:

i need the school to do my job as a parent.

  45. Kenny says:

This my fellow people is the continuation of the downfall of our society… oh i would hope the school knows more about my child than me… im sorry but i would rather tax payers money go to our schools teachers for actually teaching than go to some firm or whoever to look at kids facebook and twitter pages… parents do your damn jobs and know your kids

  46. Tooten Otter says:

Yeah hire a private company full of perverts to monitor kids. That's what's wrong with this country and possibly world… We attack a problem with the wrong solution
