Tennessee online school giving K-12 students option to learn from home

IT’S A NEW WAY OF HEADING BACK TO THE CLASSROOM– AND KIDS ARE DOING IT WITHOUT LEAVING THEIR HOME. ASHLEY SHARP EXPLAINS HOW THE TENNESSEE CONNECTIONS ACADEMY IS PAVING THE WAY FOR HUNDREDS OF TENNESSEE STUDENTS TO LEARN ONLINE. WELL AMY– MORE THAN 600 KIDS ACROSS THE STATE OF TENNESSEE ARE GETTING THEIR FIRST TASTE OF GOING BACK TO SCHOOL– RIGHT FROM BEHIND THEIR COMPUTER SCREEN. THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR THE TENNESSEE CONNECTIONS ACADEMY HAS EXISTED IN TENNESSEE– AND THEY COULD STILL SEE OVER A THOUSAND STUDENTS IN THEIR VIRTUAL CLASSROOMS AFTER ENROLLMENT WRAPS UP. IT’S CHANGING THE WAY MANY PEOPLE LOOK AT SCHOOLING– CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS KINDERGARTEN AGE ARE GOING TO CLASS IN AN OYNLINE PORTAL– IT’S OFFERED ALL THE WAY THROUGH SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL. INSTRUCTORS FOR THE SCHOOL TELL ME IT’S BASICALLY IDENTICAL TO GOING TO A PUBLIC SCHOOL– THE SAME CURRICULUM STANDARDS, THE SAME WORKLOAD, YOU STILL HAVE THAT ONE ON ONE TEACHER TO STUDENT LEARNING ENVIRONEMENT– IT’S JUST ALL DONE VIRTUALLY THROUGH AN ONLINE PORTAL. ALL YOU NEED IS A LAPTOP AND A WEBCAM– AND KIDS ARE READY TO GO TO CLASS. AN INSTRUCTOR RIGHT HERE IN THE TRI CITIES TELLS ME WHILE MANY MIGHT BE CONCERNED CHILDREN AREN’T GETTING THE SOCIAL EXPOSURE THEY WOULD GET AT A SCHOOL– THEY’RE COMBATTING THAT IN THESE PORTALS. “THEY’LL BE ABLE TO ITNERACT, VIRTUALLY, WITH THEIR PEERS IN THOSE CLASSES. THEY’LL GET TO TALK TO EACH OTHER, ASK EACH OTHER QUESTIONS, YOU CAN EVEN PUT THEM IN GROUPS WITHIN THAT VIRTYUAL ENVIRONMENT SO YOU CAN GET THEM TO TALK AND GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER.” TEACHER NIKKI STARNES WORKED AT DANIEL BOONE HIGH SCHOOL FOR 11 YEARS– SHE’S NOW AN INSTRUCTOR FOR THE ONLINE SCHOOL. SHE TELLS ME SHE BELIEVES THERE ARE PROVEN ADVANTAGES TO ONLINE MODELS FOR STUDENT’S LEARNING– MOST IMPORTANTLY BEING THAT THE STUDENT CAN WORK AT THEIR OWN PACE- AND PARENTS CAN GET MORE INVOLVED IN THEIR CHILD’S LEARNING. THEY BELIEVE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT’S GOING TO CONTINUE TO GROW IN TENNESSEE– AS TENS OF THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN ARE ENROLLED IN ONLINE SCHOOLING ACROSS THE COUNTRY. AMY? NEW THIS MORNING – A JEFFERSON COUNTY SCHOOL

  1. Volunteer Country says:

More proof brick & mortar schools thing of past. No need to build new schools.
