Welcome to Virtual College

♪ [music] ♪ – [Woman] Hello, and welcome to the
Virtual College, the home of distance learning at Miami Dade College. We’re glad
you’re joining our online community of learners to achieve your academic goals.
First, your online course is in a learning management system, LMS for short. You can
either type it into the address on a web browser, mycourses.mdc.edu, or simply log
in using the same username and password that you use to access the student portal
to register for classes and to enter into your MDC email account. Hi. Welcome to
Virtual College. How may I help you. – [Michelle] Hi. My name is Michelle, and
I wanted to ask you some questions about online classes. See, my schedule has been
an issue because I’ve recently accepted a full time job, and I’m usually helping
to take care of my nephew. I’d like to complete a degree, but it’s
been too difficult to commute and attend classes. – Well, I’m glad that you’ve decided
to visit us, and that you want to complete your college degree. It seems
that the convenience of our online classes would be a great fit for you and your
schedule. Did you know that the Virtual College offers the Associate in Arts,
several Associate in Science degree programs, and college credit
certificates entirely online? – Really? Wow, that sounds great.
But, when you say entirely online, what does that mean? Do I have to come to
a Miami Dade campus at all during the semester? – No, not at all. Our students have
the flexibility of creating their own personal schedule that works for them by
completing coursework at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Now, you
may need to come to Miami Dade College to complete a required proctored midterm
and/or final assessment in one of our testing centers. But you may also take it
from home by using technology supported proctoring. – That seems really convenient. I’ve
actually heard that online classes are easier than face-to-face. Is that
true? – No, they’re actually more challenging,
because students must learn to use skills and time management and
organization to complete coursework. See, we follow the same standard academic
calendar, which means that students must complete all assignments by the posted
due date. So, for Virtual College courses, it’s very important that students actively
participate, or else they may be dropped. They must complete all assignments,
which includes discussions, quizzes, tests, and other activities by
the deadline, because simply logging in does not indicate active participation. – This information was really
helpful. Can I enroll now for the following term? – Absolutely. Our Student Support
Center Staff is here to help you right away. It was a
pleasure to meet you. – Thanks, I’m really looking
forward to a great semester. – I wish you the best. – Thank you. – The easiest way to contact the
Virtual College Student Support Center is from the Virtual College website,
virtual.mdc.edu. You can find the Get Help section. You can also stay connected and
be informed of updates and exciting news by following the Virtual College on
Facebook and on Twitter. When you are on the Virtual College website, you can click
on the Facebook and Twitter connections. Each of our online learners is important
to us. We wish you academic success and welcome you to the Virtual
College Community. Thank you. ♪ [music] ♪
